Spiritually Speaking: Why do you think Santa Winks?
He knows that you, as an adult, are watching in wonder . . . the same wonder your children have on seeing gifts with their names under the tree or on the table.

I'd always took it to mean he was trying to reassure the guy who was watching him ("... soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread") that he wasn't some thief or criminal coming in to nick his stuff or murder his whole sleeping family. But are you implying with your wording of the question that it's kind of a "screw Jesus" wink, and that the watcher is being told that Santa is the true heart of Christmas and there is no Christ and he (the watcher) has no need to "dread" a vengeful Catholic god? As I say, intriguing... :)
Reply:Mrs. Claus was none to pleased with him and threw some flour in his eye before his yearly departure. Santa might appear to be a nice guy, but no ones heard the rest of the story. Santa finally turned christian so he could tell Mrs. Claus to keep her mouth shut while waving the book in her face. That's what started the incident.
Reply:Actually, it was a typo -- it was supposed to say "w@nk".
Reply:It's a tick he mysteriously aquired about 40 years ago while delivering presents to children in Alaska.
Reply:Because he's in a coca cola commercial. Drink too much coke, and you get involuntary muscle contractions.
